Video SEO Checklist Template: Titles, Tags, Chapters, Thumbnails, Captions

Most videos fail before they are published — not because the content is bad, but because the metadata is an afterthought. YouTube can only recommend what it understands, and it understands your video through the title, description, chapters, captions, and the behavior of the first viewers. This free video SEO checklist template gives you 25 checks across five groups: title and thumbnail, description and tags, chapters and captions, engagement and distribution, and the technical plus analytics pass after launch. It is built for YouTubers, course creators, and marketers who want every upload to have the same professional launch routine instead of a rushed five minutes of guesswork.

What’s inside this checklist

The template follows the order of a real publish workflow. Title and thumbnail checks (6) lock in the click: keyword placement, the 60-character limit, and thumbnail specs that stay readable at small sizes. Description and tag checks (5) cover the searchable text layer, including chapter timestamps that double as Google-visible key moments. Chapters, captions, and accessibility checks (4) handle the spoken and on-screen keyword layer most creators skip. Engagement and distribution checks (5) cover end screens, cards, pinned comments, and playlists. The final technical and analytics group (5) covers file naming, publish timing, and the 48-hour review that tells you whether to iterate.

Video SEO checklist (sample)

These ten samples show the pattern — one or two checks from each group. The full 25-point checklist is in the free download at the bottom of this page.

  1. Primary keyword appears in the title, as close to the front as reads naturally
  2. Title is under 60 characters so it never truncates in search or suggested feeds
  3. Custom thumbnail uploaded at 1280 x 720 px, readable at small sizes — never an auto-generated frame
  4. Primary keyword appears in the first 1 to 2 lines of the description
  5. Full chapter timestamps included, with the first timestamp at 00:00
  6. Captions added — uploaded SRT or carefully reviewed auto-captions
  7. End screen added pointing to the next most relevant video or playlist
  8. Pinned comment posted asking a question to spark discussion
  9. Video added to at least one relevant public playlist
  10. First-48-hour stats reviewed: CTR above 4 percent and average view duration on target

How to use this checklist

  1. Copy the full checklist into your upload SOP doc or print it beside your editing station.
  2. Fill in title, description, tags, and chapters in YouTube Studio before scheduling — never after publishing.
  3. Upload the custom thumbnail and SRT captions as part of the same pre-publish pass.
  4. Set end screens, cards, and the pinned comment in the first hour after the video goes live.
  5. At the 48-hour mark, review CTR and retention; iterate the title or thumbnail within two weeks if either misses target.

Consistency is the whole game. One optimized video is a lottery ticket; twenty-five videos launched with the same checklist is a system that compounds.

Frequently asked questions

Does the video file name matter for YouTube SEO? Slightly. A keyword-rich file name is a small relevance signal and good hygiene, but the title, description, captions, and viewer behavior signals matter far more. Do it because it takes five seconds, not because it will rank you.

How many tags should I add to a YouTube video? Five to eight specific, relevant tags is plenty. Tags are a minor signal; stuffing dozens of tags or adding irrelevant trending tags does not help and can look spammy to both viewers and reviewers.

Are chapters really worth the effort? Yes. Chapters improve the viewing experience, and YouTube surfaces them as key moments in Google search results — which means your video can win search real estate even when it does not rank the full video page.
