Video Script Template Pack (5 proven formats)
Staring at a blank page is the hardest part of making videos. You know your topic, you know your audience, but turning that knowledge into a script that holds attention for five or ten minutes feels like guesswork. The secret that experienced creators share is that they rarely start from scratch — they work from proven structures. A good script template hands you the skeleton: where the hook goes, where the value lands, where the call to action sits.
This free pack gives you five ready-to-use video script templates covering the formats that perform best right now: the classic talk-to-camera video (hook, intro, outline, call to action), the listicle video, the step-by-step tutorial, the storytelling arc, and the vertical short-form script for Shorts, Reels, and TikTok. Two templates are shown in full below; the free download contains all five, each with an expanded version including timing notes, B-roll cues, and on-screen text suggestions.
What’s inside this pack
Template 1 is the talk-to-camera workhorse — the format behind most educational and commentary videos, with a hook that stops the scroll, a quick credibility intro, a clear point-by-point outline, and a single call to action. Template 2 is the listicle format, built for countdowns and roundups with smooth transitions that keep viewers watching to the end. Template 3 is the step-by-step tutorial, structured around numbered steps with checkpoints so viewers can follow along and get a result. Template 4 is the storytelling arc, which turns any experience or case study into a narrative with tension and payoff. Template 5 is the vertical short-form script, a tight 30-to-60-second structure optimized for Shorts, Reels, and TikTok with a pattern interrupt in the first second.
Each template includes section labels, timing guidance, and placeholder lines you replace with your own content. They work for YouTube, online courses, client work, and social video alike.
Two templates, shown in full
Below are Template 1 (talk-to-camera) and Template 5 (vertical short) in full, ready to copy. The download at the bottom of this page contains all five templates with expanded versions — timing notes, B-roll cues, and on-screen text suggestions included.
TEMPLATE 1 — TALK-TO-CAMERA (Hook / Intro / Outline / CTA) Target length: 6–10 minutes | ~130–150 words per minute
[HOOK — 0:00–0:15] Open mid-action with the payoff, not the setup. “By the end of this video, you will know exactly how to [RESULT] — and the first step takes under two minutes.”
[INTRO — 0:15–0:45] Who you are and why you are qualified, in two lines. “I’m [NAME]. I’ve [CREDENTIAL/EXPERIENCE], and today I’m breaking down [TOPIC] into [NUMBER] simple parts.”
[ROADMAP — 0:45–1:00] Tell them what is coming so they stay. “Here’s what we’ll cover: [POINT 1], [POINT 2], and [POINT 3] — plus a bonus tip at the end that most people get wrong.”
[POINT 1 — 1:00–3:00] State the point, explain it, give one example. [POINT 2 — 3:00–5:00] Same structure. Add a quick on-screen graphic or B-roll. [POINT 3 — 5:00–7:00] Same structure. This is your strongest point — spend the most time here.
[RECAP — 7:00–7:30] One sentence per point. Reinforce the transformation. “So remember: [POINT 1], [POINT 2], [POINT 3].”
[CTA — 7:30–8:00] One clear action only. Never ask for three things. “If this helped, [SUBSCRIBE / DOWNLOAD / COMMENT] — and I’ll see you in the next one."
TEMPLATE 5 — VERTICAL SHORT (Shorts / Reels / TikTok) Target length: 30–60 seconds | ~75–150 words total
[0:00–0:02 — PATTERN INTERRUPT] Freeze the scroll with a bold claim or visual. On-screen text: “[SURPRISING CLAIM]” — say it out loud at the same time.
[0:02–0:10 — SETUP] One sentence of context. No backstory. “Here’s the [THING] nobody talks about when it comes to [TOPIC].”
[0:10–0:40 — THE PAYOFF] Deliver the value fast: 3 quick points or one clear demo. “First: [POINT 1]. Second: [POINT 2]. Third: [POINT 3].” (Cut to a new angle or zoom on every point — movement keeps retention.)
[0:40–0:50 — TWIST OR PROOF] One line that makes it stick. “And here’s the proof: [QUICK RESULT / SCREENSHOT / BEFORE-AFTER].”
[0:50–0:60 — LOOP CTA] End with a line that flows back into the start. “Follow for part 2 — I’m breaking down [NEXT TOPIC] tomorrow."
The other three templates in the download: Template 2 (listicle video — countdowns and roundups with retention transitions), Template 3 (step-by-step tutorial — numbered steps with viewer checkpoints), and Template 4 (storytelling arc — setup, tension, turning point, payoff).
How to use this template pack
- Download the full pack using the button below and choose the template that fits your video idea.
- Replace every [BRACKETED PLACEHOLDER] with your own topic, points, and wording.
- Read the script out loud once — anywhere you stumble, rewrite the line in simpler words.
- Mark your B-roll, graphics, and on-screen text cues before you film, not during.
- Film in sections and edit to the template’s timing; cut anything that does not serve the next beat.
The templates are deliberately plain-spoken. Write the way you talk, not the way you write essays — contractions, short sentences, and direct address (“you”) all keep viewers engaged. If a section feels too long when you read it aloud, it is too long on camera. Trust the structure: thousands of successful videos follow these exact beats, and the format works because it matches how attention actually behaves.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to follow a script template word for word? No. Use the structure — the order of the sections and the job each one does — and write the actual lines in your own voice. The template keeps you on track; your personality keeps viewers watching.
Which template should a beginner start with? The talk-to-camera template is the easiest starting point because it mirrors a natural conversation: hook the viewer, explain the topic, deliver the points, and close with one clear call to action.
How long should my script be for a 10-minute video? Most speakers deliver about 130 to 150 words per minute on camera. A 10-minute video therefore needs roughly 1,300 to 1,500 words of script, plus pauses for B-roll and demonstrations. For Shorts and Reels, aim for 75 to 150 words total.
