Free ASCII Art Generator — Convert Images to Text Art

October 12, 2026 · 3 min read · By the DollarWise team

How it works

ASCII art turns a picture into pure text — every pixel’s brightness becomes a character, dense symbols for the shadows and light ones for the highlights. Upload any image, choose how wide the artwork should be and which character set to draw with, then copy the result or save it as a text file. It all happens in your browser with the Canvas API; your image is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the art look squished or stretched when I paste it?

Text characters are about twice as tall as they are wide, so this generator already compensates 2:1 when sampling your image. If it still looks off where you pasted it, make sure that app is using a monospace font — proportional fonts destroy the alignment.

What kind of image works best?

High contrast and a clear subject. Portraits, logos and silhouettes convert beautifully; busy landscapes with lots of mid-tones turn muddy. Raising the width to 150–200 characters recovers a lot of detail.

Can I use the art commercially?

The output is derived entirely from your own image, so your rights in the original carry over. Just make sure you own or have permission to use the source photo.
