Podcast Episode Outline Template Pack (5 formats)
The episodes that sound effortless are the ones that were outlined. A solid outline keeps your episode on time, makes sure every segment earns its place, and turns editing from a rescue mission into a light polish. This pack gives you five ready-to-use episode outline templates, one for each of the most common podcast formats.
It is built for podcasters at any level — whether you are launching your first show or your fiftieth episode. Each template follows the same skeleton: a clear goal, timed segments, and a call to action, so you can fill in the blanks in about fifteen minutes and record with confidence. The full pack of all five formats is in the free download below; two complete templates are shown right here.
What the 5 templates cover
The interview template is the workhorse of most podcasts — a structured question arc that takes a guest from backstory to expertise to rapid-fire, without the conversation drifting. The solo deep-dive template is for teaching episodes where it is just you and the topic, built around three main points with evidence and examples. The news roundup template keeps multi-story episodes tight with a headline-per-story structure and your take on each. The storytelling case study template follows a narrative arc — setup, conflict, turning point, resolution, lesson — for episodes that teach through real examples. And the Q&A mailbag template turns listener questions into a structured episode with intros, answers, and a clear close.

How to use these podcast outline templates
- Pick the format that matches your episode and copy the template into your notes app or document.
- Fill in the episode goal first — one sentence. If you cannot write it, the episode is not ready.
- Draft your questions or points as bullets, not full sentences, so your delivery stays natural.
- Add rough time markers next to each segment so a 30-minute episode does not become 55 minutes.
- Print or open the outline on a second screen while recording, and check off segments as you go.
Outlining is the highest-leverage fifteen minutes in podcasting. It is the difference between episodes people finish and episodes people abandon halfway. Use these templates until the structure becomes instinct, then keep the download handy for the formats you use less often.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need to outline every podcast episode? Yes — even a loose outline. Episodes without one tend to ramble, run long, and miss their key points. A good outline takes 15 minutes to fill in and saves you an hour in editing. It also makes you sound more confident, because you always know what comes next.
How long should a podcast episode outline be? One page is plenty. The outline is a roadmap, not a script — bullet points, questions, and time markers. If you are writing full sentences for everything you plan to say, you are scripting, not outlining, and the delivery usually sounds stiff.
Which format should a new podcaster start with? Solo deep-dive. It is the simplest to produce (no scheduling, no guest coordination), it builds your on-mic confidence fastest, and it teaches you pacing. Add interviews once you are comfortable, and add news or mailbag formats once you have an audience sending questions.
